Observer Building Rooftop

As one of Hastings tallest buildings, with panoramic views the rooftop will act as both a local beacon and unique viewpoint, helping further embed and connect it with the town centre. A new bell tower riffs on the historic sound that notified workers that it was time to wash the printer’s ink from their hands before heading home for the day. Here it will provide an acoustic connection and landmark for the local area.
The design for the roof top introduces a series of sculptural abstract tree forms that frame the space, transforming the existing steel roof structure into a verdant canopy that surrounds a new multi-use roof top environment. The trees add height, creating a new visual (and illuminated) landmark for the building. The trees are complemented by dense planting to the edges, and the scheme is supported by a simple palette of materials that are robust and timeless.

Community ownership is a key part to this project, and the installation will provide scope for a local skills exchange, to train up the future custodians, supporting the management and maintenance of key assets, creating job opportunities and skilling people up.
