Living Pillars Port Talbot

Neath Port Talbot Council commissioned Will Sandy | Design Studio in collaboration with The Environment Partnership and Human Nature Partnership, to carry out a feasibility study for three locations along the raised section of the M4 motorway Port Talbot, South Wales. The primary aim of the project was to explore innovative ways to improve the visual and environmental impact of highways infrastructures with particular emphasis on motorway pillars at three locations in Neath Port Talbot.

A modular toolkit was developed in coordination with the South West Trunk Road Association to deliver urban greening in key locations, while ensuring that access to the motorway infrastructure is maintained. The project explored the activation of adjacent green spaces and under-utilised natural assets such as the Ffrwd Wyllt, attenuating stormwater runoff from the motorway above, enhancing local biodiversity and reducing the impacts of air pollution.

The interventions work to transform these areas into multifunctional spaces that significantly improve the local character. The green infrastructure solutions can also be used as catalysts for wider change across Port Talbot. An opportunity to engage with under-reached members of society, local manufacturing involvement and introducing a community led management of each space.
