Excel Phase 03

ExceL London Phase 3 is a major expansion of the Royal Docks exhibition centre, adding 25,000sqm of event space, including a 55m clear-span upper-level floor and a 13m cantilever over the dock. We supported the design team with the development of an adaptable public realm approach. We embraced the wider regeneration of the Royal Docks and responded to the aspirations proposed in the Royal Docks Public Realm guide.

The landscape design takes inspirations from the changeable and adaptive exhibition environments inside the halls. The design approach presents a range of adaptable, reconfigurable modules that allow for endless arrangements, uses and locations. The exterior spaces can be configured to a variety of spatial types, supporting the social and cultural programs inside the Excel Centre. At the same time improving the environmental performance and strengthening the place identity as a global exhibition destination outside.

The focus is on the dock edge with the ‘Modular Mile’ south facing public realm activations. Establishing a linear multifunctional landscape that acts as an intersection between the architecture and the future initiatives proposed along the dock itself. The ‘Modular Mile’ presents a bespoke set of public realm elements that encourage a diverse and ever-changing experience for local residents, visitors to the Royal Docks and the exhibition centre users to enjoy.
