Cedarwood House

Will Sandy | Design Studio worked closely with the structural engineers and fabricators to create a unique steel staircase that runs the full height of the four-storey property. Each stair spindle folds through the stair runner to provide a continuous line that in turn supports each oak tread, linking into the oak flooring throughout the house. The mature cedar tree to the rear of the property posed an interesting design challenge. The tree root protection area informed the layout, with a floating cantilevered steel terrace enabling level access from the kitchen/living area out to the south facing rear gardens.
Large boulders saved from the house excavations, were integrated into a small, shaded terrace area to the side of the property. A simple planting palette of evergreens repeats throughout the garden, anchoring the perennial planting. Airy grasses and perennials blur the line between the terrace and the lawn, with gently clipped, mounded shrubs act as a foil for grasses against the rocks. A muted palette of greens and whites adds interest along the boundaries and in shadier areas, with a small orchard planted to the southern boundary providing screening and a catalyst for the productive food growing area.
